ENGLISH GENERAL PAPER

Cambridge International AS Level

October/November 2022

English is widely spoken and utilized around the world, and its status as the world's most common language is undeniable. However, whether this is a desirable state of affairs is a highly debated topic.

One of the main advantages of English being the world's most common language is that it provides a convenient basis for commerce within and between nations. English is widely spoken in international business, tourism, and diplomacy, making it easier for people from different countries to communicate and conduct transactions. This can promote economic growth and cultural exchange.

Another advantage of English's status is that it is a historically established language in many countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. This means that many people in these countries already speak English and can easily communicate with others around the world.

Additionally, most media, including books, films, music, and news, is available in English and is easily accessible internationally. This can expose people to different cultures and perspectives, and promote understanding and tolerance.

Furthermore, the ease of learning the English language and the availability of learning opportunities, such as language schools and online resources, make it possible for many people around the world to learn English.

On the other hand, it is also important to recognize that English exists alongside local languages and should not threaten to displace them. Many cultures have unique languages and dialects that are integral to their identities, and it is important to preserve and respect these languages.

Furthermore, the dominance of English can threaten the survival of lesser spoken languages in unique areas of the world, which can result in a loss of cultural heritage and knowledge. Additionally, English's status is often linked to post-imperialism and cultural homogeneity, which can be seen as a negative aspect.

Moreover, requiring those who would not otherwise need it to learn a second language can be seen as a burden and can lead to feelings of alienation, especially for those who grow up speaking a different language.

In conclusion, English being the world's most common language has both advantages and drawbacks. On one hand, it can promote economic growth and cultural exchange, and make it easier for people from different countries to communicate. On the other hand, it can threaten the survival of lesser spoken languages, perpetuate feelings of alienation, and be linked to post-imperialism and cultural homogeneity. Therefore, it is important to balance the benefits of English's status with the need to respect and preserve local languages and cultures.
